Lena Coremans is System Integration Engineer at CSi. She oversees the technical side of our projects, and is the linchpin between the customer and the CSi engineers. Lena looks at the customer’s requirements and how those fit in the bigger picture, how the system should behave, and into what environment and/or existing system the new system will be integrated.
What is the most important skill you have developed at CSi?
“I’d say coordination. Essentially, my job is translating the customer’s vision into something our engineers can build. I used to be on the customer side, so I understand that perspective well. Now, I’m dealing with more interests, it’s a different dynamic that adds a new layer of complexity.
On the technical side it’s quite a broad role. You need to know enough about everything to be able to connect the dots and pass on the right information to the right people. There’s a lot of expertise within our team. On most projects we work with two System Integration Engineers, and it’s always a collaborative effort, I learn a great deal.”
What makes this particular role at this company so enjoyable?
“The scope varies for every project. It depends on the customer, the existing system, and what needs to be integrated. The customer’s needs also vary, e.g. from a straight forward robot palletiser to an elaborate system with case and pallet transport. It’s fascinating how not only the technology changes from project to project, but also the people and the cultures you work with. What’s also great is that within CSi communication is very straightforward. There aren’t many bureaucratic layers to go through, which makes collaboration easy.”
How does your work contribute to the larger company mission?
“As a System Integration Engineer, I’m already involved with a project during the quotation phase to assess whether the proposed system is feasible. Together with a Layout Engineer, we translate the concept into something that can actually be built. Then, working with the Hardware, Software and Mechanical Engineers, we develop it into a fully detailed technical project and give support during the installation on site. I would say my added value lies in being the central connector. I make sure everyone is aligned and has the right information.”
