Tim Akkermans has been with CSi since 2007. Starting as a student, he has grown into the role of Team Lead Hardware Engineering, currently leading a team of five engineers. Soon, he’ll take the next step as Team Lead Controls, where he’ll oversee a team of 50 hardware and software engineers.
As Team Lead Hardware Engineering, Tim ensures his team has the tools, (technical) knowledge and support they need to do their job well. His main focuses are on collaboration and celebrating success. He connects people and makes sure everyone is informed.
What is the most important skill you have developed at CSi?
“Staying flexible and continuously improving! We work on multiple projects simultaneously, each assignment is different. CSi gives you the freedom to approach this in your own way. I also mentor interns, and we often have temporarily hired team members. You learn a lot from them, they bring fresh perspectives.
It’s great to keep learning and innovating, especially since technology always evolves. Suppliers introduce new solutions, and customers ask for new technologies, so we adapt. We take courses, and we learn on the job. Also, new developments often give us the chance to improve our standard models. Engineers are not only technical but they’re creative too, and this allows us to use both sides.”
What makes this particular role at this company so enjoyable?
“For me, it’s the freedom and the culture at CSi. We’re a friendly and down-to-earth company, where there’s always time for a chat. Over the years, I’ve noticed that people tend to stay, and even temporary colleagues often return. You see each other regularly and build strong relationships. I’d say we know each other better than just the usual coffee machine small-talk.
In terms of the work itself, I really enjoy helping people and giving them the opportunity to grow. Within the team, we look at what energises someone, so we can help them develop their strengths.”
How does your work contribute to the larger company mission?
“On one hand, I create connections between the hardware & software engineers and the product teams, project teams and the board. On the other hand, I try to get the best out of my team, and keep them motivated. I also look at what CSi needs as a whole. When I move into the Team Lead Controls role, we’ll have a vacancy for a Hardware Engineer. Together with the Hardware Engineering team, we’ll define what’s needed for the new role.”
