Peter Valen leads the Project Engineering team, managing planning, team and individual development, and offering support where needed. A Project Engineer is involved throughout most of the project, and Peter ensures the right skills and experience are assigned to the project. He has been with CSi for over 30 years in various engineering and team lead roles.
What is the most important skill you have developed at CSi?
Delivering customer projects has been the most valuable skill I’ve developed. We can’t do projects alone, it must be in partnership with the customer. We need to understand their needs, and they must understand our solutions. That collaboration is a skill in itself. The same applies internally: a Project Engineer relies on his colleagues e.g. engineers, production, assembly and site teams. Learning to coordinate across people, roles and departments is essential.
What makes this particular role at this company so enjoyable?
CSi is a project-based organisation, and every project is different. You work internationally and engage with different cultures. The openness within CSi also makes it a great place to work, you can approach anyone if you need something. Because we rely on each other across different disciplines, people don’t just focus on their own tasks but also look at what’s needed as a whole. I enjoy my role as Team Lead because I can share 30 years of experience with the new generation. I don’t do projects myself anymore, which I always enjoyed, but leading the team is a new challenge I also enjoy. Together with other colleagues I also independently validate safety in projects, looking with fresh eyes to ensure our equipment is safe to operate.
How does your work contribute to the larger company mission?
Our team is involved in key choices during the detailed sales phase, shaping the foundation for a system that customers will use for decades. If we design the system right, the customer benefits from the highest quality. As Team Lead, I help my team work smoothly with customers and colleagues. No one delivers a project alone, and you need all the different areas of expertise to successfully complete a project.
